Sogo mail server – preface

SOGo mail server setup and configuration.

Preface:

This guide is written for Ubuntu 12.04 x64 server edition for the installation of SOGo mail server using the ZEG script here: http://www.onlinedemo.hu/71-zeg-install-script

“Zero effort” it is not, but kudo’s to the author for creating this script.

I’ve spent literally hours and hours trying different linux email servers – hundreds of installs of ubuntu and centos. There are so many different documentations, different blogs, different linux OS’s, different software – and frankly, most of the documentation over SOGo is lacking details and concepts. It’ll work to a certain extent but not completely. I’m attempting to change this. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re feeling as frustrated as I am.

The ZEG script will get you close to where you need to be – but there are some concepts you need to understand – and some changes/troubleshooting you need to do after every reboot. There will be some cleanup and verification after the script is done. The author of the script has done a great job, but there are too many variables dependent on your network setup – it will NOT work perfectly by just inputting information, don’t have that expectation.

I will attempt to explain the details of the script, the concepts behind the installation of sogo and the troubleshooting steps you MUST perform as you go. I’m no expert with linux or sogo, so bear with me here. After 22 years dealing with windows, it’s difficult to wrap ones head around the concepts of linux – samba, sogo, postfix etc.

The creators of Sogo say to add the IP’s and hostnames to the windows “hosts” file, you do not need to do this – again, the support is very disappointing. If everything is set up correctly, as soon as you open outlook (I’m using 2013 btw) and select exchange connection – the system automatically populates and adds the outlook anywhere information that will work internally or externally. It just won’t trigger the inbox synch.

This is a work in progress… If you find errors or details lacking, please let me know. If i’m doing something wrong, or should be adding on, please feel free to say so.

There are at least two issues that i’m having, if you know how to fix them, please let me know.

As I dig more into sogo, I realize the documentation and support really sucks. There is a file /etc/ocsmanager/ocsmanager.ini that doesn’t get configured for ldap. You really have to search to put it all together.

Sogo Mail server – ocsmanager.ini

– Outlook does not automatically synch the inbox but webmail works fine. There is no trigger within openchange or mapi to let outlook know to update the inbox itself.

– When emails are sent, there are two received sections – one is correct, the other shows as localhost – has something to do with the /etc/hosts file.

Let’s do it…

1 thought on “Sogo mail server – preface”

  1. Have 2 static IP’s at home, and i’ve been running sogo mail server on one of my own domains off an I5 laptop – it’s running great. Ran into a few issues with SPF and TXT records but that’s all sorted out and my mail isn’t being considered junk anymore.

I’ll be installing the first production server at a clients this weekend, will post the results.
